How to Relieve Sciatica Pain at Home (And When to See a Chiropractor)

Sciatica is one of those conditions people describe as unlike anything they’ve experienced before. It’s not just back pain — it’s a sharp, shooting, burning, or electric sensation that travels from the lower back down through the buttock, thigh, and sometimes all the way to the foot.

Here’s what you can do at home to manage sciatica — and when it’s time to get professional help.

What Actually Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is the result of the sciatic nerve being irritated or compressed. This most commonly happens due to a disc bulge pressing on a nerve root, a misaligned vertebra narrowing the space where the nerve exits the spine, piriformis syndrome (where the piriformis muscle presses on the nerve), or spinal stenosis.

Home Strategies That Can Help

1. Move — But Carefully

Complete rest is generally not recommended for sciatica. Gentle movement keeps blood flowing to the affected area and prevents the surrounding muscles from tightening further. Short, gentle walks are often well-tolerated. Avoid prolonged sitting, which increases disc pressure and can worsen symptoms.

2. Ice and Heat

In the first 48–72 hours of an acute flare, ice (wrapped in a cloth) applied to the lower back for 15–20 minutes can help reduce inflammation. After this initial phase, heat packs can ease muscle spasm and improve circulation.

3. Gentle Stretching

The following stretches are commonly helpful for sciatic pain — go gently and stop if anything increases the leg pain:

  • Knee-to-chest stretch: Lying on your back, slowly pull one knee toward your chest and hold for 20–30 seconds.
  • Piriformis stretch: Lying on your back, cross one ankle over the opposite knee and gently pull both toward your chest.
  • Child’s pose: Kneel, then sit back toward your heels and reach your arms forward along the floor. Hold for 30 seconds.

When to See a Chiropractor

Home management can provide relief, but it won’t resolve the underlying cause. Seek professional assessment if any of the following apply:

  • Pain has lasted more than 2 weeks
  • Symptoms are worsening rather than improving
  • You have numbness or weakness in the leg or foot
  • The pain is affecting your sleep or daily function
  • You’ve had sciatic episodes before that keep recurring

At Pure Chiropractic Mentone, we use the Gonstead approach to identify exactly which disc or vertebra is causing the nerve compression. Many of our sciatica patients experience significant relief within a few sessions.
