What Is Gonstead Chiropractic and Why Does It Matter?

If you’ve looked into chiropractic care, you may have come across the term “Gonstead” and wondered what it means. Is it just a marketing term? A different technique? Or something more significant?

At Pure Chiropractic in Mentone, every chiropractor on our team is Gonstead trained — and it’s not something we take lightly. Here’s what it means, why it’s different, and why we believe it’s the most thorough and effective approach to chiropractic care available.

A Bit of Background

The Gonstead system was developed by Dr Clarence Gonstead, an American chiropractor who spent over 55 years refining his approach to spinal analysis and adjustment. Rather than applying generalised adjustments to the whole spine, he developed a rigorous system to identify the specific vertebrae causing a problem — and adjust only those. His clinic became one of the busiest chiropractic practices in the world, with patients travelling from across the globe to be treated there.

What Makes Gonstead Different?

The Gonstead approach uses a five-part assessment system to identify the exact source of the problem:

  • 1. Visualisation: The chiropractor observes your posture, gait, and movement patterns to identify imbalances.
  • 2. Instrumentation: A small handheld instrument scans the spine to detect inflammation and nerve irritation.
  • 3. Static Palpation: The chiropractor feels the spine while you’re still, checking for swelling, tenderness, and abnormal texture.
  • 4. Motion Palpation: The spine is assessed while moving, to identify where motion is restricted or abnormal.
  • 5. X-Ray Analysis: When clinically necessary, full-spine X-rays assess the structural and biomechanical condition of the spine in detail.

Why Does This Matter for You?

When you adjust a spine without a clear, evidence-based picture of what’s happening, you risk moving things that don’t need to be moved and missing the structures that actually do. The Gonstead method’s strength is that it takes the guesswork out of chiropractic care. Every adjustment has a specific purpose based on objective findings.
